Vacietis, Ojārs - Poetry
Ojārs Vācietis (1933–1983) was a prominent Latvian poet and translator, widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Latvian literature. After graduating from a local secondary school, he studied philology at the University of Latvia. Beginning in 1958, Vācietis worked as an editor in several Latvian magazines and newspapers, including Literatūra un Māksla (Literature and Art), as well as at the Riga Film Studio and in the publishing industry.
His poetry collections—such as Tālu ceļu vējš (The Wind of the Distant Road, 1961) and Elpa (Breath, 1966)—often addressed social tensions and tragic events of his time, exposing hypocrisy and demagogy within Soviet political life. Vācietis’s poetry is distinguished by its directness, emotional intensity, lyricism, and occasionally grotesque depiction of social reality. His work played a significant role in shaping the moral and artistic voice of late-20th-century Latvian poetry.
