Meyrink, Gustav - The Man on the Bottle

Year: 2003Genre: Mysticism

The short story Der Mann auf der Flasche (“The Man on the Bottle”, 1904) by the Austrian writer Gustav Meyrink (1868–1932) is a dark and atmospheric tale first published in German in 1904.

The work belongs to the genre conte cruel (“cruel tale”), combining elements of mystery, grotesque imagery, and Orientalist motifs. Like many of Meyrink’s early stories, it reflects his fascination with the uncanny and the psychological boundaries between reality and illusion, anticipating the mystical and symbolic themes that later appear in his famous novel The Golem (1915).
