Gottfried August Bürger (1747–1794) was a German poet and key figure in early Romanticism, best known for his 1773 spectral ballad "Lenore".
This ballad gained immense popularity across Europe. It tells the story of Lenore, who curses God in her despair after her fiancé, Wilhelm, fails to return from the Seven Years' War. A figure resembling her lover arrives to take her on a terrifying journey to a graveyard, revealing himself to be Death.
